This is the second post in a
new series called Building Character. The idea is to take a roleplaying game
and build a few different characters for that game, writing about the process
and posting the end results. I’ve found this to be a useful exercise for
getting myself acquainted with a game’s rules mechanics. Plus, it can be a fun
creative activity.
Last week, I posted a character I made for the Star Wars Saga Edition Roleplaying Game. This second one
I’ve made is Kaili Sorn, a Jedi healer that’s gone mercenary after Order 66.
Process
In creating Kaili Sorn, I had
in mind the concept of a young woman in the Jedi Medical Corps, who was
assigned to an out of the way planet dealing with an epidemic there when Order
66 went into effect. Afterwards, she would cut her ties with the Jedi and find
work on the fringes of the galaxy, hoping to avoid notice by the new Empire.
So, right away, I knew she would be a Force-sensitive healer.
In the Star Wars Saga
Edition Roleplaying Game, the Jedi class makes a logical starting point for
any combat-ready Force-user. However, most of the medic abilities I wanted to
give Kaili were attached to the soldier class, so after level one I immediately
moved her into that class. In order to be an effective medic, she needs to be
able to keep alive herself in addition to being able to effectively heal
others. So in choosing how she would develop I tried to split her talents and
feats between those two objectives.
Background
Kaili Sorn was born on
Aldaraan, but was discovered by the Jedi at a very young age and taken to live
at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. While she did have some ability with
the Force, it never really developed too much as she grew. So, Kaili was never
chosen to become a Padawan learner before she had become too old to begin the
training. Though slightly dejected, Kaili wasn’t the type of person to feel
sorry for herself. Like other children raised in the Temple who never became Padawans, Kaili was assigned to one
of the Jedi Service Corps. Because she had an interest in biology, and had
demonstrated deep compassion for others, Kaili was assigned to the Medical
Corps. She was serving in the MedCorps, dealing with an epidemic far from the
fighting of the Clone Wars, when Order 66 was given. The clone troopers didn’t
at first turn on the Service Corps workers, because they weren’t considered
full-fledged Jedi. By the time the Empire decided to purge them along with the
rest of the Jedi Order, Kaili had cut her ties with the Jedi and gone into
hiding on the fringes of the galaxy. On the crime ridden desert world of
Tatooine, Kaili joined a small mercenary crew lead by Shara Koth where she
could apply her medical background to keeping her new found allies alive on
dangerous missions.
Personality
Kaili Sorn is like a cool
breeze on a hot day, or a shelter in a storm. She isn’t too athletic, but she
is very healthy and incredibly resilient. Mentally, she’s a step above average,
being especially attuned to her surroundings and to other people. She has a
natural charm, and a manner that exudes warmth and caring. She has a somewhat
passive personality, and doesn’t feel comfortable in a leadership role, but
she’s extremely reliable and loyal to a fault. She’s a good listener, and
people tend to be naturally drawn to her. When conflict arises her first
instinct is to try to diffuse it peacefully.
Game Statistics
I wanted Kaili to be a
moderately experienced character so I made her level 6, putting her first level
in the Jedi class and the other five in the soldier class. I chose Human as her
species. I decided to use the optional background rules from the Rebellion
Era Campaign Guide, instead of the standard destiny mechanics found in the
core rulebook, and gave Kaili the medical background (which helps her out with
a couple of skills). Kaili has below average Strength, only average Dexterity,
but pretty good Constitution, and above average scores in all of her mental
abilities. Her skills focus on the areas of endurance, medicine, and using the
Force.
Combat Tactics
Kaili Sorn has pretty good Fortitude
and Will Defenses, but her Reflex Defense is kind of low, so she’ll want to
avoid getting shot at. She has a lot of hit points and a few other ways to keep
herself alive, so she’s in pretty good shape when it comes to a battle. She’s
fairly proficient with a blaster pistol or a simple weapon (such as a knife or
grenade). She was never a full-fledged Jedi, but she has some basic skill with
a lightsaber, and still keeps one hidden among her things.
Most characters in the Star
Wars Saga Edition Roleplaying Game can take a “second wind” once per day.
This allows them to recover hit points equal to one-quarter their maximum hit
points, or equal to their Constitution score, whichever is higher. With the
combination of the Tough as Nails talent and the Extra Second Wind and
Unstoppable Combatant feats, Kaili can do this up to three times per day, and
all in the same encounter if she needs to. Also, as often as once per round, if
she takes no other actions, Kaili can use the “recover” action. Normally, this
just allows a character to shake off a negative condition, but the Fortifying
Recovery feat allows her to gain a few bonus hit points as well when she does
this. All of this helps to make Kaili a durable combatant that is hard to take down.
Now, how does Kaili work as a
healer for her allies? First of all, the Man Down talent helps her get right
next to any ally that gets taken down so that she can use her Treat Injury
skill to heal them. Her Battlefield Remedy talent lets her remove a negative
condition from an ally with the use of first aid, in addition to the normal hit
point recovery first aid provides. The Experienced Medic and Surgical Expertise
feats allow her to perform surgery more quickly, and on multiple patients at
once, if the situation gets really dire.
Beyond her mundane healing
abilities, Kaili also has the Force as her ally. Once per round, she can use
her Consular’s Vitality talent to grant a few bonus hit points to one nearby
ally. These bonus hit points last until the beginning of her next turn and
provide a slight cushion against enemy attacks. Twice per encounter, she can
use the Vital Transfer Force power, which lets her transfer some of her own hit
points to an ally at a 1:2 ratio, granting her ally twice as many hit points as
she’s giving up. Also, because it is important for the medic to stay alive,
once per encounter she can create and maintain a Force Shield around herself.

The more I read these the more I really wish I had the opportunity to read up more on the mechanics and the classes and so forth. I think with more full information on my options I could probably make better choices.
ReplyDeleteHmm... It's hard to get all of that information without the books, which -sadly- are now out of print. You're already familiar with the Jedi class and all of the available feats, though. The only thing really different about the other classes is Base Attack Bonus progression, HP progression, their bonuses to Defense, class skills, and the talents they have access to. Getting access to the details on all of those talents would be the really tough part. I know I compiled all of the Jedi talents for you, but that took a while.
