Tiny Epic Kickstarter
I've backed a couple of games on Kickstarter before. Specifically, they were a card game called Villages and a compact board game called Tiny Epic Kingdoms. Both turned out to be pretty fun. Well, the creators of Tiny Epic Kingdoms are currently taking pledges for their latest game: Tiny Epic Galaxies. The game allows one-to-five players to build a galactic civilization, competing to colonize planets, collect resources and grow economically and culturally. As its primary mechanic, players roll a set of specialized dice on their turn and use their results to perform various actions. There are some cool auxiliary mechanics that make the game sound even more interesting, such as ways to modify your dice results for more control and being able to act on the results of another player's roll - keeping all players engaged on every turn. If you pledge for the "deluxe" version of the game, you also get an exclusive mini-expansion which adds powerful super weapons to the game.
One cool reason to donate to a Kickstarter project instead of just waiting for the game to hit retailers is that as people pledge money to the project, the game designers get a better idea of how many copies of the game to order from the manufacturer. As a result, they can better calculate profit margins and often end up adding new content to the game as a result. Already, Tiny Epic Galaxies has been expanded to support a single-player solitaire mode and a fifth player. They've also added more planet and mission cards to the game, allowing for greater variations in play experience from one game to the next.
Tiny Epic Galaxies has 23 days left to go on Kickstarter. If it looks like a game you would be interested in having, I recommend pledging for it now. Eighteen dollars gets you the base game with shipping, another eight dollars gets you the exclusive mini-expansion as well. There are a lot of upstart game designers trying to get their games funded on Kickstarter, but Tiny Epic Galaxies seems a notch above the rest. It's worth checking out.
